Newton Heath Lancashire & Yorkshire Railways Football Club was formed in 1878 and joined the English football league in 1892. Newton Heath F.C. was the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway’s Newton Heath depot works team and played there matches at the North Road football ground for the first fifteen years of their existence, they then moved to bank street ground in 1893 which was in the town of Clayton. After joining the football league Newton Heath dropped the L&YR from their name distancing themselves from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company.
In 1902 due to financial problems including the bank closing the bank street ground Manchester breweries managing director J.H. Davis bought into the club changing its name to Manchester United.
Manchester United moved to the 75,797 seat old Trafford stadium in 1910 and has been home to Manchester United ever since, although during the second world war bombing caused Manchester united to ground share the Maine road stadium with Manchester city football club for the eight years between 1941 and 1949.
Tragedy struck Manchester united in 1958 when a flight the team were on crashed while refuelling in Munich, the Munich air disaster killed eight Manchester united players and almost claimed the life of their iconic manager Sir Matt Busby who at one point had been given the Last rites.
Manchester United has won the FA Cup a record eleven times, the league cup three times, the premier league again a record eleven times, the European cup three times and also the FIFA club world cup in 2008.
